Design and Installation
The DR970X-2CH Plus maintains BlackVue's signature slim cylinder design. At 125mm long and just 33mm in diameter, the front unit is remarkably discreet behind a rearview mirror — far less obtrusive than the rectangular screen-equipped cameras that dominate the market at lower price points. There is no built-in screen; everything is configured through the BlackVue app or web portal.
The installation experience is polished. The included adhesive mount positions the camera at a precise angle, and a single coaxial-style connector links front and rear units via the included 10-meter cable. Cable management throughout the A-pillar and headliner is clean with the included trim pry tools. Most installations take 45–75 minutes on a first attempt.
For parking mode, a hardwire kit (BlackVue Power Magic Pro on Amazon →) is required. We strongly recommend it — the DR970X's parking mode is one of the most sophisticated available, and it would be a waste not to use it.
Video Quality
Daytime
The 4K front footage at 60 Mbps is the best we have tested from a consumer dash cam. Detail is exceptional: at highway speeds, we could reliably read license plates at 40+ feet, and road sign text remained legible well beyond what lower-resolution cameras capture. The wide dynamic range handles transitions between bright sunlight and deep shadows admirably — there is no significant blow-out or crush in most lighting conditions.
Color accuracy is excellent and natural. BlackVue does not apply the warm or punchy processing that some competitors use to make footage look subjectively impressive but less accurate. What you see is an honest representation of the scene — which matters most when footage is used as evidence.
Night Performance
This is where the Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor truly earns its reputation. Night footage from the DR970X-2CH Plus is in a different class from most competitors. In urban environments with adequate street lighting, the footage is almost indistinguishable from daytime quality. Even in dark suburban residential streets or poorly lit parking areas, the camera captures usable, detailed footage with minimal grain.
The f/1.6 aperture lets in substantially more light than the f/2.0 lenses on many competing cameras, and BlackVue's image processing handles the resulting data cleanly. Headlight blooming — the white wash that obscures details around oncoming lights in many cameras — is well-controlled and rarely causes the camera to lose important detail in the surround area.
Rear Camera
The 2K rear camera is a strong performer that complements the front unit well. At 2560×1440, it captures detail far beyond what most 1080p rear cameras manage. Daytime rear footage is clear, and nighttime rear performance — aided by the STARVIS 2 sensor — is the best we have seen in a rear-facing camera at this price.

The DR970X-2CH Plus's cloud feature set is the most compelling reason to choose it over equally capable (but unconnected) competitors. With a BlackVue Cloud subscription and either Wi-Fi pairing or an optional LTE module, the camera can:

In practice, the parking mode notifications work well. During our testing period, the camera alerted us to three genuine events (a car brushing our bumper in a lot, someone walking very close past the car at night, and a delivery driver bumping the vehicle) and produced only two false alerts (a large truck passing slowly). That is an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.
The BlackVue app is polished and reliable. Playback is smooth, GPS track overlays work correctly, and settings changes apply immediately. It is the best dash cam app ecosystem we have used.
