Check before you buy anything. On a lot of Volkswagens the CarPlay hardware is already fitted and simply switched off, because App-Connect was an option box that was never ticked. That makes it a licence unlock, not a hardware upgrade, and it is far cheaper than the quotes people are usually given.
Why VW is different
Volkswagen calls CarPlay and Android Auto App-Connect. Many cars left the factory with the hardware and software present but the feature disabled, because the original buyer did not order it. That is why a dealer can activate it rather than install anything.
So the first question is not which adapter to buy. It is whether your car already has the capability sitting dormant.

What decides which applies to you
The answer depends on your infotainment generation, MIB2, MIB2.5 or MIB3, and on which supplier variant is fitted. Some model years also need a USB port change before CarPlay will work over a cable.
Get the head unit part number read, or have your VIN checked against the original factory option codes. App-Connect is a specific option code, so a specialist can tell you quickly whether the hardware supports activation.

Plug your iPhone into the USB port with a proper data cable. If CarPlay appears on the screen, you have wired CarPlay and a dongle will make it wireless. If nothing happens, your car does not have CarPlay and no dongle can add it.
