The R8w is the replacement, at $799.99. It is the same detector — same dual antennas, same nine Ka segments, same radar front end — with Wi-Fi added, which changes one practical thing: firmware updates arrive over the air instead of requiring a USB cable and a Windows PC.

That sounds like a convenience feature. It is closer to a reliability feature. Uniden has a track record of shipping firmware to its Wi-Fi models that its Bluetooth-only models did not receive on the same schedule. On a detector whose auto-lockout algorithm has been improved by firmware repeatedly, being on the connected model is worth more than the $50 difference suggests.

Everything below applies equally to a used or remaining-stock R8, except the firmware update method and the price.

Range: the Uniden wins where it counts, but not everywhere

Vortex Radar ran instrumented long-range tests across three Ka frequencies. The result is not a clean sweep for either detector:

Two out of three, including both of the frequencies you are most likely to actually encounter, go to the Uniden.

One honest caveat that most comparison pages leave out: the tester did not publish absolute distances for these runs, and explicitly cautioned that this was a single test whose results should not be treated as definitive on their own. Anyone quoting you a specific mileage figure for this matchup is making it up. What the data supports is a direction, not a distance.

False alerts: the Redline filters better and pays for it in reaction time

This is the most misreported part of the comparison, because both halves of it are true and most pages report only the first half.

The Redline 360c has, in Vortex Radar’s assessment, the best false alert filtering available, with strong blind-spot-monitor rejection in Auto mode. That is real, and on a commuter route through suburbs full of BSM-equipped cars it is the difference between a usable detector and one you switch off.

The cost is responsiveness. The same testing describes the Redline as sluggish on K band precisely because of that filtering, and notes that speeding it up means cutting Ka segments — which risks missing a detection outright. The Uniden offers good responsiveness on both K and Ka, and ramps signal strength more progressively as you close on a source.

For scale on the Uniden’s real-world false rate: roughly five false alerts on a typical two-hour highway drive. That is livable, not silent.

The way to think about it: the Redline optimises for the alerts you don’t want to hear, the Uniden for the alerts you can’t afford to miss. Which is the right trade depends entirely on whether your driving is urban or interstate.

Photo radar: a clear Uniden win

The Redline is the cheaper detector on day one and the more expensive one from roughly month 20 onward. Whether that matters depends on whether you use the camera database — if you drive routes you already know, you may never need it, and the comparison collapses back to the sticker price.

Uniden

  • Auto-lockout is the long-running complaint. The algorithm carried over from earlier Uniden models and firmware 1.35 improved it without fully fixing it. Enthusiast forums have dedicated threads about it going back years. If you want set-and-forget lockouts, this is the wrong detector.
